Google Inc. today announced it acquired Kaltix Corp., a Palo Alto, Calif.-based search technology start-up. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Web search company Google on Tuesday said it bought Kaltix, a start-up that builds the personalized and context-sensitive search tools the industry sees as part of its next wave of product offerings.
There's very little information about Kaltix Corp. online at this point, but Stefanie Olsen wrote an article describing Kaltix's goals last August.

It's not really news, but people are still writing about the fact that Microsoft has enormous wealth and intellectual resources, and is dedicating those resources to building a new search engine. The reason people are writing about it is because Microsoft and their PR team want them to write about it, and the news has been pretty slow in the search engine arena of late.

Yahoo! is currently testing the use of Inktomi web search and comparing it to Google, likely in preparation for replacing Google with Inktomi on Yahoo!'s properties.

AltaVista, which is owned by Overture, which is being purchased by Yahoo!, offered a new search toolbar on its site today at
www.altavista.com/toolbar. It will translate text or web pages into 10 languages and will block pop-up ads. Very handy. Of course, the
Google toolbar also blocks pop-up ads, but it doesn't translate like AltaVista's does. Yes, you can have both.
