Combining the "free for all" approach of Google with a smart search engine that constantly evolves, AltaVista retains its position near the top of our favorites list. On AltaVista, every page on your site will eventually be spidered, if you are patient.
AltaVista is the first search engine to ban software submissions entirely. You must manually submit to their database. It's a unique and very neat solution.
AltaVista was also the first search engine to ever ban us for "spamming". It was back in 1996, and we were obsessed with Alta Vista, painstakingly testing theory after theory in an attempt to crack their algorithm. Mind you, we weren't trying to cheat - we were just trying to learn...

Like Alltheweb, AltaVista was purchased by Overture, which was then purchased by Yahoo! People at Yahoo! are suggesting that soon AltaVista will carry Yahoo! results. For now, the free submission page has been deactivated on AltaVista. Watch and see what happens.

AltaVista Results
Web Results are the most relevant web pages found by Yahoo! Search Technology in response to your search terms. Web Results are generated from the billions of web pages crawled and indexed by Yahoo! Search. The Yahoo! Search index is more than 99% populated through the free web crawl process. Results may also include links to sites that participate in the Content Acquisition Program (CAP). CAP enables content providers to submit web pages and content directly to Yahoo! for review and inclusion within the Yahoo! Search index through the Site MatchTM or Inktomi Search SubmitTM programs. Sites from both of these programs pay to be included in the search engine index, and those participating in Site Match also pay to be reviewed for relevance. Results may also include links to sites that participate in the AltaVista Express Inclusion Program. Sites from this program also pay to be included in the search engine index and reviewed for relevance. Participation in CAP or Express Inclusion has no bearing on placement or ranking in search results.

THE KEY:
Optimize each page of your site for one keyword phrase. Submit your site to Alta Vista's search engine, and put easy-to-follow links from your home page to all your sub-pages. AltaVista will follow them eventually.
DIRECTORY:
The AltaVista directory is a copy of the LookSmart Directory.
SEARCH RESULTS:
As with every other portal and search engine, AltaVista has been changing it's partners and it's search results lately. Now AltaVista's "Products and Services Sponsored Matches [changed as a result of the recent FTC Recommendations" section, which appears above the search results, is including both DoubleClick ads and Overture ads. The "Products and Services" section usually contains 4 links.
Directly below the "Products and Services Sponsored Matches" section, in bold, you will see, "We found ##,### results:". What follows are the actual search results. Except that the very first result is also a sponsored listing, part of a new service called "AltaVista News," in which companies pay AltaVista to list their articles in the search results. After that first listing are the search results you're looking for.
You may notice that there are some listings in the AltaVista search results that have logos and multiple section links below them. One common set of links is, "Promotions - Services - About Us - Review - News". Those companies have paid AltaVista to include their site in the index and to change the appearance of their listing. Click here to see how they do it.
Finally, on every page in AltaVista, in the right-hand column, you will notice either one tall tower banner, or three smaller ads. AltaVista sells that space to companies such as Ah-Ha and others.
