Search Engine Marketing FAQ

Answers to some of the thousands of questions asked by marketing executives who attended the AMA's first free Web seminar, "Why Can't My CEO Find Our Website??"

How can I submit my site to the Inktomi database?

If other websites have linked to your website, then the Inktomi spider (Slurp) will eventually find your site and add it to the Inktomi database. If you are in a hurry, you can pay Inktomi to add your site. There are many services which sell Inktomi listings. For an annual fee, each url you submit will be immediately added into Inktomi's database. You can find a list of Inktomi resellers here.

If you are interested, Inktomi also offers a service known as Index Connect in which you can submit every single page of your site to the database through an XML feed. If you participate in the program, you are allowed to submit custom title tags, keywords, and descriptions directly to Inktomi. You can change your listings at any time, which will enable you to tweak the listings over time so that they will climb higher in the search results. The program requires that you pay for every click though. In order to participate you must be able to submit over 1,000 pages, and pay for their click-throughs monthly. Many SEO firms have joined the program and are submitting their clients' pages through Index Connect. Though this isn't search engine optimization, it is a useful technique for getting clients' pages immediately listed on Inktomi's partners, which include MSN and HotBot. Inktomi also provides the backfill search results for LookSmart and Overture (provided with an exact match isn't available in LookSmart's or Overture's primary databases).

Inktomi is no longer. In December, 2002, Yahoo! announced that it would acquire Inktomi. Shortly thereafter, Inktomi was shut down entirely. Visit our analysis of Inktomi for more about For more about the history of Inktomi.
