There are many directories and search engines out there which call themselves "family-friendly," "child-friendly," or "child-safe." For many of them, that simply means they that do not list "adult" content, but in all other ways are just like standard web directories. In our opinion, simply not listing adult content does not make a directory or search engine family-friendly or child-safe. The directories below were selected because they are focused exclusively on kids sites, sites that appeal to children.

	Open Directory - Kids and Teens - It's the Open Directory, so you know that it's comprehensive. The Kids and Teens directory organizes sites by topic and tags each listing with a note specifying whether the site is appropriate for Kids, Teens, Mature Teens, or any combination of the three. 	Yahooligans! - It's Yahoo! for kids. While the Yahoo! portal features news, stocks, and personals, Yahooligans! pushes games, jokes, and fun. Free Site Submission
	Backwash Kids! - Disgusting name - great site. Backwash Kids is a directory of kids sites organized by subject. Backwash Kids! is also a kids site in and of itself with chat, kid-themed columns, personalization, and communities. Free Site Submission
	Berit's Best Sites for Children - Directory of kids sites reviewed by Berit Erickson. Free Site Submission.
	Children Canada - Directory of kids sites with a search engine. Free Site Submission
	FamilySeek - Search engine and directory of approximately 500 kids sites. To add your site, first use the search engine to search for sites similar to yours, then click on the link which says "related" in the search results. That link will take you to the appropriate category in the Family Seek directory. From there, click "Suggest a Site" in the left hand column to add your site.
	ALA Great Web Sites for Kids - Directory of sites compiled by the American Library Association specifically for kids aged PreK through Middle School. Free Site Submission
	Jabuti - Directory of kids sites submitted by parents and reviewed by Jabuti editors. Free Site Submission
	KidsClick! - Directory of sites appropriate for kids provided by the Ramapo Catskill Library System based in Middletown, New York. KidsClick! stopped accepting submissions in 2000, but they continue to build the directory.
	KidsKonnect - Directory of kids sites arranged in two ways: alphabetically and by subject. Directory pages include links to useful kids sites as well as information about and pictures of the subject covered. Email the webmaster to add your noncommercial website.
	Letter Lane - A very cute concept in a kids site directory. Kids click on a letter to see words that start in that letter, then click on the words to visit sites about those words. To get your noncommercial site listed, you need to email the webmaster.
	Spike2000.com - Low-tech but colorful directory of kids sites, ranging from cool to science. Sites designed for children under the age of 13 are added for free. Free Site Submission
	Start Squad - Kids sites collection arranged in a fun, interactive site designed for kids in preschool, elementary, or middle school by the State Library of North Carolina. You can browse the site in HTML or in Flash. There's also a section for grown ups. To submit a site, use the contact form.
